This study was conducted to gather information on the issue of aging infrastructure across the DOE Complex. ARC researchers performed a literature/internet search and contacted the major DOE sites to determine what efforts are being implemented to:

• identify all the excess facilities,
• prioritize the maintenance/surveillance activities,
• prioritize D&D when funding becomes available, and
• whether they have used a commercial product or developed their own process for making these determinations.

This document provides a matrix of contamination control products, including fixatives, strippable coatings, and decontamination gels. This matrix continues to be updated by FIU to provide more detailed product information for each product.

Deactivation and decommissioning (D&D) work is a high priority across the DOE Complex. The D&D community associated with the various DOE sites has gained extensive knowledge and experience over the years. To prevent the D&D knowledge and expertise from being lost over time, an approach is needed to capture and maintain this valuable information in a universally available and easily usable system.

The objective of the D&D Toolbox Project is to use an integrated systems approach to develop a suite of D&D technologies (D&D toolbox) that can be readily used across the DOE complex to reduce technical risks, improve safety, and limit uncertainty within D&D operations.

The task addressed in this report was a focused literature review on decontamination agents/materials for radiological surface decontamination in support of the SRS 235-F Risk Reduction Project. This summary report will help the project team develop their decontamination concepts for the PuFF process cells and define the FY 14 and out year’s technical activities.

This Handbook addresses the development and use of a process to keep radiation exposures of the public and environment, and releases of radioactive material to the environment from DOE activities as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA), that is; an ALARA process to implement and comply with DOE O 458.1, Radiation Protection of the Public and the Environment.

Florida International University’s Applied Research Center, in collaboration with NuVision Engineering, assessed the requirements for remotely operated systems to support D&D operations at ORNL, identified technologies that have been used to meet the expected requirements, and, where no applicable technology exists to meet the D&D need, identified the gap to facilitate development of a solution.

The current labour-intensive approach to decontamination and decommissioning (D&D) suggests that research and development (R&D) aimed at more efficient and effective decommissioning technologies and processes could bring significant benefits to current and future D&D projects. Improvements are required to decrease the hundreds of billions of dollars (USD) that will be required to decommission facilities that have shut down or will shut down around the world. This report discusses decommissioning activities and challenges that could benefit from R&D and summarises applicable emergent technologies and research efforts to build a base of knowledge regarding the status of decommissioning technology and R&D.

This legacy document from 1998 was the result of a six-month, collaborative effort by a team of DOE representatives and national laboratory scientists, with input from additional DOE plants and sites. It defined, for the first time, a DOE research and development path for RIM through the year 2020.

FIU-ARC selected the International Climbing Machines’ (ICM’s) robotic climber to perform this technology demonstration. The selected technology was previously demonstrated spraying fixative products at the hot cell mockup facility at FIU-ARC in November 2008. Based on the initial FIU demonstration and specific technical requirements identified at the DOE facilities, DOE requested that the follow-up demonstration be expanded to include strippable coatings and decontamination gels. FIU-ARC conducted a demonstration of the technology in coordination with ICM to evaluate the remote crawler machine’s ability to spray strippable coatings and a decontamination gel on vertical surfaces of concrete and steel.
