Contamination Control Fixative Listd Adoption of Protective Equipment for Use Inside 242-Z at Hanford's Plutonium Finishing Plant Closure Project

Use of a specific combination of encapsulating suit and respiratory system kept workers cooler, offered better protection, and improved efficiency during high hazard entries.

Contamination Control Fixative Listd Aging Infrastructure at DOE Sites

This study was conducted to gather information on the issue of aging infrastructure across the DOE Complex. ARC researchers performed a literature/internet search and contacted the major DOE sites to determine what efforts are being implemented to:

  • identify all the excess facilities,
  • prioritize the maintenance/surveillance activities,
  • prioritize D&D when funding becomes available, and
  • whether they have used a commercial product or developed their own process for making these determinations.
Contamination Control Fixative Listd Contamination Control Product Matrix

This document provides a matrix of contamination control products, including fixatives, strippable coatings, and decontamination gels. This matrix continues to be updated by FIU to provide more detailed product information for each product.

Contamination Control Fixative Listd D&D Knowledge Management Information Tool - Tech Fact Sheet

Deactivation and decommissioning (D&D) work is a high priority across the DOE Complex. The D&D community associated with the various DOE sites has gained extensive knowledge and experience over the years. To prevent the D&D knowledge and expertise from being lost over time, an approach is needed to capture and maintain this valuable information in a universally available and easily usable system.

D&D Program Map – U.S. Department of Energy Facility Deactivation & Decommissioning (D&D) Executive Overview, 2011 Edition D&D Program Map – U.S. Department of Energy Facility Deactivation & Decommissioning (D&D) Executive Overview, 2011 Edition

The D&D Program Map presents an integrated overview of DOE’s complex-wide D&D project locations, scope, and issues. This document as well as additional information can also be found on the Office of Environmental Management website.

D&D Program Map – U.S. Department of Energy Facility Deactivation & Decommissioning (D&D) Executive Overview, 2011 Edition D&D Program Map Addendum: Impact of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) on EM’s D&D Program, 2013 Edition

The D&D Program Map Addendum includes information on the effects of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) and facility transfers on the EM D&D Program. This document as well as additional information can also be found on the Office of Environmental Management website

Contamination Control Fixative Listd Fixatives Applied to Hot Cell Facilities via Remote Sprayer Platform

The objective of the D&D Toolbox Project is to use an integrated systems approach to develop a suite of D&D technologies (D&D toolbox) that can be readily used across the DOE complex to reduce technical risks, improve safety, and limit uncertainty within D&D operations.

Contamination Control Fixative Listd Focused Literature Review – Decontamination Agents/Materials for Radiological Surface Decontamination

The task addressed in this report was a focused literature review on decontamination agents/materials for radiological surface decontamination in support of the SRS 235-F Risk Reduction Project. This summary report will help the project team develop their decontamination concepts for the PuFF process cells and define the FY 14 and out year’s technical activities.

Department of Energy - Office of Health, Safety and Security - Worker Safety and Health Enforcement Documents Optimizing Radiation Protection of the Public and the Environment for use with DOE O 458.1, ALARA Requirements.

This Handbook addresses the development and use of a process to keep radiation exposures of the public and environment, and releases of radioactive material to the environment from DOE activities as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA), that is; an ALARA process to implement and comply with DOE O 458.1, Radiation Protection of the Public and the Environment.

ORNL Remote Operations for D&D Activities - Final Report ORNL Remote Operations for D&D Activities - Final Report

Florida International University’s Applied Research Center, in collaboration with NuVision Engineering, assessed the requirements for remotely operated systems to support D&D operations at ORNL, identified technologies that have been used to meet the expected requirements, and, where no applicable technology exists to meet the D&D need, identified the gap to facilitate development of a solution.

ORNL Remote Operations for D&D Activities - Final Report R&D and Innovation Needs for Decommissioning Nuclear Facilities

The current labour-intensive approach to decontamination and decommissioning (D&D) suggests that research and development (R&D) aimed at more efficient and effective decommissioning technologies and processes could bring significant benefits to current and future D&D projects. Improvements are required to decrease the hundreds of billions of dollars (USD) that will be required to decommission facilities that have shut down or will shut down around the world. This report discusses decommissioning activities and challenges that could benefit from R&D and summarises applicable emergent technologies and research efforts to build a base of knowledge regarding the status of decommissioning technology and R&D.

Robotics and Intelligent Machines in the U.S. Department of Energy: A Critical Technology Roadmap (RIM Roadmap), October 1998 Robotics and Intelligent Machines in the U.S. Department of Energy: A Critical Technology Roadmap (RIM Roadmap), October 1998

This legacy document from 1998 was the result of a six-month, collaborative effort by a team of DOE representatives and national laboratory scientists, with input from additional DOE plants and sites. It defined, for the first time, a DOE research and development path for RIM through the year 2020.

Robotics and Intelligent Machines in the U.S. Department of Energy: A Critical Technology Roadmap (RIM Roadmap), October 1998 Strippable Coatings and Decontamination Gel Applied via Remote Sprayer Platform

FIU-ARC selected the International Climbing Machines’ (ICM’s) robotic climber to perform this technology demonstration. The selected technology was previously demonstrated spraying fixative products at the hot cell mockup facility at FIU-ARC in November 2008. Based on the initial FIU demonstration and specific technical requirements identified at the DOE facilities, DOE requested that the follow-up demonstration be expanded to include strippable coatings and decontamination gels. FIU-ARC conducted a demonstration of the technology in coordination with ICM to evaluate the remote crawler machine’s ability to spray strippable coatings and a decontamination gel on vertical surfaces of concrete and steel.

Waste and D&D Engineering and Technology Development, Year End Technical Report, Applied Research Center, Florida International University, 2012 Waste and D&D Engineering and Technology Development, Year End Technical Report, Applied Research Center, Florida International University, 2012

This document provides a summary of the Florida International University Applied Research Center’s activities performed for the Department of Energy (DOE) Environmental Management office under the DOE Cooperative Agreement (Contract # DE-EM0000598) for the period of May 18, 2011 to May 17, 2012 in the area of waste and D&D engineering and technology development.
