ViGIR robots are designed to perform the most hazardous activities in future disaster response operations and to work with their human counterparts to reduce casualties, avoid further destruction, and save lives.

Team ViGIR, which stands for Virginia-Germany Interdisciplinary Robotics Team, consists of researchers from TORC Robotics, Technische Universitat (TU) Darmstadt, Virginia Tech (VT), and Oregon State University (OSU). They were one of twenty-six teams from eight countries that participated in the Virtual Robotics Challenge (VRC) which challenged teams to develop software to control and supervise a simulated robot in a virtual environment. Competing teams applied their software in an attempt to complete a series of tasks involving manipulation and locomotion. The top seven teams in the VRC earned funding and a Boston Dynamics ATLAS robot from DARPA to prepare to compete in the DRC Trials in December 2013. http://www.teamvigir.org
